Parthenope Movie storyline
In 1950, the Di Sangro family was expecting their second child. The birth, which took place in the waters of Posillipo, was attended by her older brother Raimondo and Sandrino, the son of the housekeeper of the luxurious palace where the family lived. He was named Parthenope in honor of the city of Naples. The little girl, thanks to the protection of her wealthy godfather, Achille Lauro, enjoyed a peaceful and happy childhood.
In 1970, Parthenope was an intelligent and daring twenty-year-old girl, aware of her beauty and the effect it had on Sandrino, who had always loved her, and on Raimondo, who had become a weak man obsessed with his sister, almost to the point of incest. Parthenope manages to get into an anthropology class taught by Professor Devoto Marotta, a strict and feared man. It is said that his temperament stems from the fact that he has a severely disabled son, but no one knows if this is true or not. A relationship of cold respect immediately develops between the young woman and the professor.
During the summer, Raimondo suggests that Parthenope and Sandrino go on vacation to Capri, where he plans to woo a wealthy heiress. Although aware of her brother's fragility, Parthenope accepts. On the island, Parthenope's erratic behavior attracts the attention of many, including the writer John Cheever and a wealthy businessman. The former will teach her to enjoy all that her youth has to offer; while the latter tries to seduce her with promises of wealth, but she refuses. Meanwhile, Raimundo succeeds in seducing the heiress, but when he kisses her, he discovers he can only love her sister. When Sandrino manages to coax sex from him, Raimondo commits suicide by throwing himself off the cliffs of Capri. His parents believe Parthenope is responsible for his death and adopt a detached attitude towards him, causing a rift that will never heal.
Later, in 1974, Parthenope, unable to overcome her guilt, asked Professor Marotta to defend her thesis on the subject of suicide; the professor accepted her as a doctoral student, but suggested she analyze another topic: the cultural impact of miracles. But shortly after, Parthenope interrupted her studies: remembering that a film agent had noticed her in Capri, she tried to become an actress. First, I turned to Flora Malfa, an aging movie star who permanently wears a mask after her face was disfigured by plastic surgery; I explained to her that fame and celebrity bring about profound loneliness. Flora then directed her to Greta Coll, an elderly actress of Neapolitan origin, who had been living in northern Italy for some time: during a New Year's party organized in her honor, the woman attacked Naples and its inhabitants, accusing them of not loving her enough; Cole advised Parthenope not to get drawn into the earthly world. Parthenope meets Roberto Criscolo, a seductive manager who takes her to the working-class neighborhoods of Naples, where the young girl discovers misery and poverty. There, she witnesses a shocking ritual called the Great Fusion, where the heirs of two Camorra families (including the one to which Roberto belongs) will publicly unite to have a child that will mark the end of their feud. After a fleeting affair, Parthenope becomes pregnant by Criscolo, but deliberately aborts. Shortly after, before moving to Milan for work, Sandrino declares his love for Parthenope for the thousandth time. She responds by blaming him for Raimondo's death and also predicts that they will never see each other again: Sandrino's love is, in fact, a pure youthful feeling, while adulthood will bring disappointments and problems. Later, as Italy plunged into the Years of Lead, Parthenope graduated with top marks, and Marotta appointed her as his assistant. The professor seemed aware of the ambiguity of her life, but continued to treat her with detachment, yet without judgment.
In 1982, Parthenope became an accomplished researcher. She received a request from an anthropological journal to write an article on the liquefaction of Saint Gennaro's blood, and decided to turn to Cardinal Tessoroni, the custodian of the saint's ampullae, to analyze the phenomenon. Marotta warned her about the bishop, whom he described as an unscrupulous scoundrel. Cardinal Parthenope promised to show her Saint Gennaro's treasure after the Mass during which the blood would be shed. In fact, the miracle did not occur, but a menopausal woman claimed that her menstrual cycle had miraculously returned, greatly upsetting Tessoroni. Later, Cardinal Parthenope would adorn her with jewels from the saint's treasury, explaining that Neapolitan spirituality, in his eyes, was nothing more than a sterile deception divided between popular superstition and worldly spirituality. Tesoroni, although aware of her lack of appeal, also asked her for sexual relations: Parthenope agreed, and in the process, the blood of Saint Gennaro was shed.
Marotta announces to Parthenope his intention to retire and suggests that she take the competitive exam in Trento to win it and return to Naples after a few years of teaching at the local university. Parthenope initially rejects this out of love for the city that bears her name, but her experience with Tessoroni changes her mind. Before saying goodbye, Marotta finally introduces her to his son, a huge being, halfway between a newborn and an adult, pudgy and childlike in his humor, made of "water and salt, like the sea": Parthenope will be fascinated by him. Instead of returning to Naples, once she becomes a professor, Parthenope remains teaching in Trento.
In 2023, after retiring, she finally decides to return to her hometown. After leaving for Capri, Parthenope finally has the opportunity to express her grief for Raimondo; upon reflection, Parthenope realizes that she has always suffered from the same contradictions as Naples, yet has been welcoming and capable of facing the worst of suffering. Feeling part of the city again, Parthenope smiles quietly in front of a group of fans celebrating his third championship win.
